Figure 5.2 illustrates the case where ML is deciding how to classify the input. Alpaydin (2020) describes this as classification. According to Glose (2018), classification is used to group similar data points into different sections to classify them. ML is used to find the rules that explain how to separate the different data points. There are multiple ways to discover these rules.

These multiple ways focus on using data and answers to discover rules that linearly separate data points. Classification approaches attempt to find the best way to separate data points with a separator line. The separator lines drawn between classes are known as the decision boundaries. The area that is chosen to define a class is known as the decision surface. If a data point falls within the boundaries of the decision surface, it will be assigned a particular class. We illustrate the classification approaches in Fig. 5.3
